ఈనాటి ఆదివారమును "ఆనందించు ఆదివారం" అని పిలుస్తారు, ఎందుకంటే ప్రభువు యొక్క పునరుద్దాన గడియలు ఆసన్నమవుతున్నాయి కాబట్టి, ఈ నాటి  గ్రంథ పఠనాలు దేవుడు మనకు ప్రసాదించు వెలుగు గురించి తెలియజేస్తున్నాయి, మనకు ఆయన కేవలం శారీరక వెలుగును మాత్రమే కాక ఆధ్యాత్మిక వెలుగును కలుగజేసి మనల్ని మంచి వైపుకు నడిపిస్తారు అనే అంశం తెలియజేస్తున్నారు.

ఈనాటి మొదటి పఠనం లో  దేవుడు సమూయేలు ప్రవక్త ద్వారా దావీదును ఇశ్రాయేలు ప్రజలకు రాజుగా ఎన్నుకొనుటను చదువుకుంటున్నాం.

సమూయేలు ప్రవక్త చివరి న్యాయాధిపతి, ఆయన యొక్క జీవితకాలం చివరి సమయంలో తన తరువాత సమూయేలు ఇశ్రాయేలు 12 గోత్రాల వారిని ఒకటిగా చేసి దేవుని యొక్క సందేశమును అందించేలా ప్రయత్నించాడు, కానీ ఇశ్రాయేలు ప్రజలు వారి వల్ల సంతృప్తి చెందలేదు, అందుకని వారు దేవుడిని ఒక రాజు కావాలని సమూయేలు ప్రవక్త ద్వారా అడిగారు.

ప్రజల యొక్క కోరిక మీదగా యావే దేవుడు సౌలును ఇశ్రాయేలుకు రాజుగా నియమించారు. సౌలు రాజును దేవుడు ఇశ్రాయేలుకు మొదటి రాజుగా నియమించారు, వాస్తవానికి యావే దేవుడు మాత్రమే నిజమైన రాజు, ఆయన్ను తిరస్కరించి మానవ మాతృణ్ణి రాజుగా ప్రజల కోరిక మీద బలంగా ధైర్యంగా ఎత్తైన వాడిని దేవుడు రాజుగా నియమించాడు, అయితే దేవుడు సౌలు జీవితం చూసి సంతృప్తి చెందలేదు.

సౌలును దేవుడు ఆమెలికేయులు  మీద యుద్ధం చేసి అంతయు నాశనం చేయమని చెప్పినప్పుడు సౌలు దేవుని యొక్క మాటను ధిక్కరించాడు - 1 సమూ 15:3,8-9 సౌలు అమలేకీయుల రాజు "అగాగును"అదేవిధంగా క్రొవ్విన ఎడ్లను, దూడలను, గొర్రెలను, గొర్రె పిల్లలను మంచివి మిగులుచుకున్నాడు, అందుకే దేవుణ్ణి  నిరాకరించారు. ఆయన రాజుగా నియమించినందుకు దేవుడు విచారించారు.

సమూయేలు సౌలు చేసిన పనికి దుఃఖించే సందర్భంలో యావే  దేవుడు ఇశ్రాయేలు ప్రజలకు మరొక కొత్త రాజును ఎన్నుకొనదలిచాడు, అందుకనే బెత్లెహేములో ఉన్న ఇషాయి కుమారుల వద్దకు సమూహేలును దేవుడు పంపించారు సమూయేలు ఇషాయి యొక్క కుమారులను చూసినప్పుడు వారి యొక్క శరీరాకృతి బట్టి, వరుస క్రమమును బట్టి, ఎత్తును బట్టి ఎన్ను కనక దేవుని చిత్తము ప్రకారం దేవునికి ఇష్టమైన వ్యక్తిని ఎన్నుకున్నారు.

అందుకని దేవుడు యెషయా ప్రవక్త ద్వారా అంటారు, నేను నరుడు చూసిన దృష్టితో చూడను అని - యెషయా  55:8-9, 1 సమూ 16,7.

సమూయేలు మొదట్లో ఒక్కొక్కరి ఆకారంను, ఎత్తు ప్రకారంగా ఎన్నుకోవాలనుకున్నారు. వారిని అందరిని దేవుడు నిరాకరించి చిన్న కుమారుడైన దావీదును ఎన్నుకున్నాడు. అందరి యొక్క ఆలోచనలకు భిన్నంగా దేవుడు దావీదును ఎన్నుకున్నాడు, దావీదు యొక్క ఎన్నిక చాలా గొప్పది ఎందుకంటే ఒక సామాన్యమైన గొర్రెల కాపరిని దేవుడు అనేక మందికి రాజుగా నియమిస్తున్నారు. ప్రజలు ఎవరు చూడని గొప్పతనం యావే  దేవుడు దావీదులో చూశారు అందుకే ఆయన్ని అభిషేకించమని తెలిపారు.

దావీదు తన యొక్క పనిలో నిమగ్నమైన సమయంలోనే దేవుడు అతడిని ఎన్నుకుంటున్నారు. పవిత్ర గ్రంథంలో కూడా చాలా మటుకి పనిచేసే సమయంలోనే దేవుడు వారిని తన సేవకై అనుకుంటున్నారు.

1. మోషే సినాయి పర్వతము వద్ద గొర్రెలు మేపే సందర్భంలో దైవ పిలుపు స్వీకరించాడు - నిర్గమా 3:1-4

2. మత్తయిని సుంకం వసూలు చేసే సందర్భంలో పిలిచారు - మత్తయి 9:13

3. పేతురు, అంద్రియ, యోహాను, యాకోబులను వలలు శుభ్రం చేసే సందర్భంలో పిలిచారు ఎన్నుకొన్నారు - మత్తయి 4:18-22

4. సౌలును దమస్కు వెళ్లే సందర్భంలో పిలిచారు తన యొక్క పని నిమిత్తమై వెళ్లే సందర్భంలో పిలిచారు - అపో 9

5. దావీదును కూడా గొర్రెలు మేపుకునే  సందర్భంలో ఎన్నుకుంటున్నారు - 1సమూ 16:11

ప్రతి ఎన్నిక దేవుని యొక్క చిత్తానుసారంగా ఉంటుంది, ఆయన పిలిచారు, ఎన్నుకొన్నారు. స్వయంగా ఆయనే  కావాలని భావించి సమూయేలు చేత అభిషేకించారు. దావీదు తన యొక్క కుటుంబంలో అంతా తక్కువగా పరిగణించబడే వ్యక్తి, అందుకే కేవలం ఆయన ఒక్కడే గొర్రెలు కాయడానికి పలమునకు వెళ్ళాడు మిగతా వారందరూ ఇంటివద్దె ఉన్నారు, దావీదు ఎన్నిక విషయంలో ఈ వాక్యం నిజం. ఇల్లు కట్టు వారు పనికిరాదని పారవేయ బడినరాయి మూలరాయి అయినది - కీర్తన 118:15-27.

కుటుంబంలో ఉన్న వారి దృష్టిలో చిన్నవాడు అంతా పనికిరాని వాడని భావించినప్పటికీ దేవుడు మాత్రము అలాంటి వ్యక్తిని ఎన్నుకున్నారు. మొదటి రాజును ఎన్నుకునే సందర్భంలో దేవుడు ప్రజల యొక్క ఆలోచనలకు అనుగుణంగా వారికి ఎలాంటి వాడు కావాలో ఆయనే ఎన్నుకున్నాడు - 1సమూ 9:2 కానీ ఆ రాజు దేవుని సంతృప్తి పరచలేదు కనుక రెండవ రాజును దేవుడు తనకు ఇష్టమైన రాజును ఎన్నుకున్నారు.

దావీదు యొక్క హృదయమును ప్రభువు చూస్తున్నారు, ఆయన యొక్క ధైర్యమును త్యాగపూరితమైన జీవితంను అలాగే ఆయన యొక్క నడిపింపును చూసిన దేవుడు దావీదును రాజుగా నియమిస్తున్నారు. ఒక కాపరిగా దావీదుకు సహనం, ప్రేమ కూడా ఎక్కువ అందుకే ఆయన్ను ఎన్నుకుంటున్నాడు, దేవుని యొక్క అభిషేకం ఎంతటి బలహీనులనైనా వారిని సైతం బలవంతులను చేస్తుంది, అభిషేకం ద్వారా దేవుని యొక్క ఆత్మ దావీదులో ప్రవేశించి అతని శక్తివంతునిగా చేస్తుంది. దావీదు ద్వారా దేవుడు ఇశ్రాయేలు ప్రజలకు అనేక యుద్ధాలలో విజయంన్ని దయచేసి దేవుని యొక్క అభిషేకం ప్రత్యేకమైనది అది మానవుల యొక్క ఆలోచనలకు భిన్నంగా ఉంటుంది, దావీదు ఇశ్రాయేలు ప్రజలను 12 గోత్రాల వారిని తన పరిపాలనలో ఐక్యం చేశారు మనం కూడా ఎదుట వారిలో ఉండే మంచితనంను వారి యొక్క హృదయం నే చోడాలి అంతేగాని బయట కనిపించే వారి యొక్క ప్రవక్త కాదు ఎందుకంటే బయటకు చాలామంది మంచిగా ఉన్నట్లు నటిస్తారు కాబట్టి కనపడేదే కాకుండా హృదయం ను చూసి జీవించాలి.

ఈనాటి రెండవ పఠనం లో  పౌలు గారు ఎఫెసులో ఉన్న క్రైస్తవులను వెలుగుకు సంబంధించిన ప్రజలు వలే జీవింపమని కోరుచున్నారు, ప్రభువు నందు జ్ఞాన స్నానం పొందినంతవరకు వారు అందరూ అంధకారంలో జీవించిన వారే కానీ జ్ఞాన స్నానంతో క్రీస్తు ప్రభువు వెలుగును పొంది ఉన్నారు కాబట్టి ఆయన వలె నీతివంతమైన జీవితంను జీవించాలి.

వారి యొక్క పాపపు  క్రియల ద్వారా చీకటిలో జీవించారు, కానీ ఇప్పుడు వెలుగు పుత్రి పుత్రికలుగా జీవించమని తెలిపారు. వెలుగు పుత్రికలుగా అంటే దేవుని యొక్క చిత్తంకు అనుగుణంగా జీవించాలి, మంచితనం కలిగి ఉండాలి, చీకటి ఎన్నటికీని వెలుగును పారత్రోల లేదు, కానీ వెలుగు చీకటిని పారద్రోలుతుంది కాబట్టి మనందరం కూడా మేల్కొని మంచి కార్యములు చేయుటకు ప్రయత్నించాలి ఈ లోకంలో యేసు ప్రభువు చెప్పిన మాట ప్రకారం మనం జీవిస్తే వెలుగు ప్రకారంగా జీవించిన వారమవుతాం.

 ఏ విధంగా మనం వెలుగు నందు జీవించగలుగుతాం అంటే:

1. దేవుని విశ్వసించుట ద్వారా మనం అంధకారంలో ఉండక వెలుగులో జీవిస్తాం - రోమి 1:22-23

2. దైవవాక్కును తెలుసుకున్నట్టు ద్వారా విశ్వాసులు అంధకారం గాక వెలుగులో ఉంటారు - 2 కొరింతీ 4:4,1  కొరింథి 1:18

ప్రభువును గుర్తించలేకపోవడం ద్వారా ఆయన శిలువ యొక్క ఔనత్వం గమనించలేకపోవటం ద్వారా ఇంకా ప్రజల అంధకారంలోనే ఉంటున్నారు.

3. దేవుని యొక్క నీతిని పాటించుట ద్వారా వెలుగులో జీవించవచ్చు - రోమి 13:12-14

4. సత్యం ను పాటించుట ద్వారా వెలుగులో జీవించవచ్చు.

5. శోధనలకు లొంగిపోకుండా జీవించినప్పుడు మన వెలుగులో జీవించవచ్చు.

6. పాపమును విడిచి క్రీస్తు ప్రభువుని అనుసరించినప్పుడు వెలుగులో జీవించవచ్చు.

ఈనాటి సువిశేష పట్టణంలో యేసు ప్రభువు పుట్టు గ్రుడ్డివానికి దృష్టిని ప్రసాదించిన విధానంను చదువుకుంటున్నాం.  యేసుప్రభు పర్ణశాలల పండుగ నిమిత్తమై ఎరుషలేము చేరారు ఈ పండుగ ఎనిమిది రోజుల పండుగ - యోహాను 7:10.

ఏసుప్రభు యెరూషలేములో ఉన్న సందర్భంలో తానే ఈ లోకమునకు వెలుగు అని బోధించారు. నన్ను వెంబడించే వారు చీకటిలో నడవక వెలుగును పొందుతారు అని ప్రభువు పలుకుచున్నారు- యోహాను 8:12.

ఏసుప్రభు వెళ్లే దారి గుండా  ఒక కుటుంబాన్ని చూశారు ప్రభు ఆయన్ను చూసి సానుభూతిని వెల్లడిస్తున్నారు అందుకనే ఆయనకు సహాయం చేయాలనుకున్నారు శిష్యులు కూడా ఈ గ్రుడ్డివాని యొక్క విషయంలో ప్రత్యేకమైన ఆసక్తిని కనబరిచారు.

గ్రుడ్డివాని విషయంలో ప్రభువుని శిష్యులు ఆయన యొక్క అధికారంకు ఎవరూ కారణం అని అడుగుచున్నారు. అప్పటి ప్రజల యొక్క నమ్మకం ఏమిటంటే ఒక వ్యక్తి కష్టాల పాలయ్యేది వారి యొక్క పాపాల వల్లనే అనే అంశమును గట్టిగానే అమ్మేవారు, ఆయన పాపాల వల్ల కానీ ఆయన తల్లిదండ్రుల పాపాల వల్ల గాని అతడు ఎంతటి దురదృష్టకరమైన స్థితికి చేరుకున్నాడు అనే శిష్యులు అతని ఎడల కనికరం కలిగి ఉన్నారు. ఏసుప్రభు పలికిన సమాధానం ఏమిటంటే ఎవరి పాపాలు ఇతని శిక్షకు కారణం కాదు కేవలం దేవుని మహిమా ఇతని యందు భయపడుటకై అతడు గ్రుడ్డి వానిగా  జన్మించాడు అన్నారు.

ఒక వ్యక్తి బాధలు కష్టాలు, అనారోగ్యాలు అనుభవించేది దేవుని మహిమను ప్రభువు వెల్లడి చేయుటకు దేవుని సానుభూతి చూపుటకు దేవుని శక్తి తెలియజేయుటకు దేవుడు ప్రతి ఒక్కరి కష్టాలలో తోడుగా ఉంటారని తెలుపుటకు నమ్మకం లేని వారికి కూడా నమ్మకం కలిగించుటకు అందుకే కొందరు అర్థం కాని విధంగా జీవితంలో బాధలు అనుభవిస్తారు అది అంతయు దేవుని మహిమ కొరకే.

లూక 13:1-9,5:18-20,యాకోబు 5:14-15 దేవుని మహిమ కొరకు బాధలు మరణం అనుభవించిన వారు చాలామంది ఉన్నారు.

ఎవరి యొక్క బాధలు కష్టాలు, శాశ్వతం కాదు అందుకు నిదర్శనం ఈనాటి సువిశేషం అతని యొక్క అంధకార జీవితం మొత్తం కొనసాగించబడలేదు, ఆయన ఈ లోకంలో కష్టపడుతున్నాడు కాబట్టి దేవుడు అతనికి మేలు చేస్తున్నారు.

ఈ గ్రుడ్డివాని విషయంలో యేసు ప్రభువే ఎక్కువ చొరవ ఆసక్తి తీసుకుంటున్నారు. ఆయన వద్దకు వెళ్లి ఆయన్ని స్వస్థత పరుస్తున్నారు అందుకే ప్రభువు ఈ లోకానికి వచ్చారు - లుకా 19:10,1 పేతురు 5:7.

ఏసుక్రీస్తు ఈ లోకమునకు వెలుగై  ఉన్నారు, ఎవరైతే అధికారం నుండి బయటకు రావాలనుకుంటున్నారు వారు క్రీస్తు ప్రభువు చెంతకు రావాలి- యోహాను 1:4, 8:12. ఏసుప్రభువుతో సంభాషించిన గ్రుడ్డివానికి ప్రభువు వెలుగును ప్రసాదించారు.

ఏసుప్రభు సాధారణంగా స్వస్థపరిచేటప్పుడు మాట ద్వారా చాలామందిని స్వస్థపరిచారు, కానీ ఇతడి విషయంలో మాటను ఉపయోగించలేదు క్రియలు చేస్తున్నారు అవి ఏమిటంటే:

1. ఆయన కనులను త్రాగుచున్నారు

2. ఉమ్మిని వినియోగిస్తున్నారు

3. మట్టిని ఉమ్మిని కలిసి అతని కళ్ళకు అద్దుతున్నారు

ఈ విధంగా ప్రభువు ఎందుకు చేస్తున్నారంటే అప్పటి ప్రజల యొక్క విశ్వాసం ఏమిటంటే పవిత్రమైన వ్యక్తుల యొక్క ఉమ్మిలో దైవ శక్తి దాగి ఉన్నదని వారి యొక్క విశ్వాసం, అతని యొక్క విశ్వాసంను బలపరచడం కోసం ప్రభువు ఈ విధంగా చేశారు మట్టిని ఎందుకు వినియోగించారంటే మట్టితో దేవుడు క్రొత్తమనిషిని చేశారు, అలాగే ఈ గ్రుడ్డివానికి కూడా దేవుడు క్రొత్త  జీవితం ప్రసాదించారు ఇక ఆయన ఎవరి మీద ఆధారపడవలసిన అవసరం లేదు ఇక బిక్షం ఎత్తుకోనవసరం లేదు అందరి చేత నిందలు భరించనవసరం లేదు స్వేచ్ఛ స్వతంత్రునిగా జీవించవచ్చు.

ఏసుప్రభు గ్రుడ్డివానిని శిలోయము కోనేటి వద్దకు పంపిస్తున్నారు శిలోయము అంటేనే పంపుట అని అర్థం అంటే మెస్సయ్య పంపబడిన విధంగా ఇతడు కూడా నీటి వద్దకు పంపబడ్డాడు దేవునికి విధేయత చూపుతూ అతడు నీటి వద్దకు వెళ్లాడు కావున అతడు స్వస్థత పొందాడు.

గ్రుడ్డివాడు స్వస్థత పొందిన తరువాత ఆయన యొక్క శారీరక అంధకారము మాత్రమే కాదు తొలగినది ఆధ్యాత్మిక అంధకారం కూడా తొలగిపోయినది. ఎందుకంటే ఆయన మొదటి ఏసుప్రభువును ఒక సాధారణ వ్యక్తి గానే పరిగణించాడు తరువాత ఆయన్ను ప్రవక్త అని గుర్తించాడు అటు తరువాత ఏసు ప్రభువును మెస్సయ్య అని మనుష్య కుమారుడని గుర్తించాడు ఆయనను స్వస్థత పరిచే దేవునిగా విముక్తిని చేసే దేవునిగా గుర్తించాడు కొంతమంది పరిసయ్యులు గ్రుడ్డివాడు విశ్రాంతి దినమున స్వస్థత పొందుట సహించలేకపోయారు దానికి తోడుగా అతన్ని అతని తల్లిదండ్రులను అనేక ప్రశ్నలు అడుగుచున్నారు వారు సోదర స్వస్థత కన్నా నియమములకే ఎక్కువగా ప్రాధాన్యత నిచ్చే జీవించారు చివరికి స్వస్థత పొందిన వాడినే వెలివేస్తున్నారు.

పరిసయులకు యేసు ప్రభువు చేసిన గొప్ప కార్యం చూచుటకు వారి యొక్క కన్నులను తెరువలేదు గ్రుడ్డివారికి దృష్టితనం చేస్తే మెచ్చుకోవడానికి బదులుగా  విశ్రాంతి దినం పాటించలేదని ఆయన మీద నిందారోపణ చేశారు పరిసయులలో మానవత్వం తగ్గిపోయింది తాము ఇంకా మోషే యొక్క శిష్యులు అని కపిట జీవితం జీవనంను గడుపుచున్నారు ఈ అంధుడు  ఏసుప్రభువు దేవుని దగ్గర నుండి వచ్చిన వాడిని గుర్తించాడు - యోహాను 9:31

దేవుడు పాపులను ఆలకించడని నీతిమంతుల ప్రార్ధన ద్వారా దేవుడు స్వస్థత నిస్తాడని భావించాడు. ప్రభువుని ఆరాధించారు, ప్రభువు మంచితనంను చాటి చెబుతున్నాడు పరిసయ్యులు ఎదుటి వ్యక్తిలో ఉన్న మంచితనం ను చూడలేకపోయారు. మనం కూడా చాలా సందర్భాలలో అంతులమే:

1. పాప జీవితం జీవిస్తూ అంధకారంలో ఉంటున్నాం

2. దేవుని వెంబడించకుండా అంధకారంలో జీవిస్తున్నాము

3. ఎదుటివారిలో మంచితనం చూడలేకపోతున్నాం

4. ఎదుటివారిని ప్రేమను చూడలేకపోతున్నాం

5. ఎదుటివారి కష్టంను చూడలేకున్నాం

6. ఎదుటివారి యొక్క అవసరాలు చూడకుండా అంధకారంలో ఉన్నాము

ఈ విధంగా చాలా సందర్భాలలో మనం అంధకారం లో  ఉన్న వారమే, కాబట్టి దేవుని వెలుగు పొందుతూ వెలుగులో జీవించుదాం.

Praying with the Right Attitude

 

The readings of the day focus on the attitude or the disposition towards Prayer, in other words how are we praying to God.

In the first reading, Prophet Hosea presents to us the prayer of repentance of the people of Israel who are afraid of God’s punishments. They were in fact complaining that God has abandoned them, hurt them and also have a feeling that only God can heal and save them. So they offer a prayer of repentance.

But when we reflect this repentant prayer, this appears superficial and their attitude in prayer and their love towards God was just momentary. There was no real repentance.

God was not pleased with this attitude, this empty expression of words and offerings. Their words seem highly devotional but hearts and actions are not resonating with their words, there was No harmony between their words and attitude. That’s why God condemns their sinful attitude.

Similarly in the Gospel too we find this type of attitude towards God in Prayer.

The societal understanding:

There are two people who went to pray, A Pharisee and a tax collector but only one goes home “justified”. The two persons in today’s Gospel represent two kinds of personalities, two kinds of attitudes and two verdicts. In people’s eyes:

●     A Pharisee is considered a model of virtue and wisdom,While

●     A  Tax collector is considered a sinner and disgraceful to the community

The prayer of the Pharisee:

●     He prayed with exalted tone filled with pride

●     He lists all his merits ( fasting and going beyond the rules)

●     He compares himself to others (looks down on others)

●     His focus was on the flaws of the other while losing sight of his need

●     In fact, it appears like praying but it’s a kind of self praise and satisfaction.

The prayer of the tax collector, on the other hand,

●     He looks at his miserable situation of heart ( life)

●     He acknowledges his sinful nature

●     He looks and begs for God’s mercy

St. Paul writing to Corinthians says, “ Pride puffs up, whereas love builds up”( 1 Corinthians 8:1). The attitude of pride and arrogance pushes us away from reality, from others, despises and looks down on others and blinds our hearts. Whereas love unites and helps to see ourselves in our real situation and welcomes the weak and embraces. This was what happened to Pharisee and the people of Israel. Their love for God was momentary, it only appeared on external offerings and utterance of few devotional words. Therefore, to be pleased and  be justified in God’s sight the readings give us a better solution.

➔   God requires of us is genuine loving actions not empty words and rituals

➔   God requires of is knowledge of God (profound relationship with God) not knowledge about God

Therefore, today it is not how many masses we participated, or how many prayers we have said but how our attitude and disposition in our relationship with God and others. Our attitude should spring from our prayer and our prayer should spring from our way of life. So we need to be humble in our approach (in our hearts, feeling and thoughts, words and actions); Sincere contrition and open the door of mercy of God; Sincere love towards God and others.

And this lent, let us choose to fast from arrogance, pride and superficial offerings and prayers.

Today, we are more concerned about having material possessions than developing real family relationships and friendships. And we spend our time, energies and resources in this regard which is dominated by work, money, appearances, power, position and possession. It is not necessarily bad, but extremely prioritising and not forging the actual valuable relationships has a negative impact on one’s life.

That’s why the readings of the day call upon total commitment that it speaks about the valuable relationship with God and others.

In the first reading prophet Hosea invites people to return to God and even guides them what they are supposed to say. He reminds them they primarily belong to God but  the problems and difficulties that they are experiencing are the result of their distancing from God. Hence, he urges them to return and repent of their words and deeds.  They are to:

1.    Turn from their mere external offerings to sincere internal repentance in their words (Prayer and worship)

2.    Turn from their trust in Assyria, its army and its God (so far they have relied upon them for their well being and offered themselves to their gods) To the One and Only God, who created, liberated and saved them always.

3.    Turn from the gods of their hands to the God of their forefathers. (today we have too, gods of our hands Like (money, fame, name, power and position..etc) 

God will shower his blessing and graces, provided they return to Him.

God will come to them, provided they heed to His voice.

God will heal their disloyalty, transgression out of his unconditional love, provided they sincerely rely on Him for their well being.

And in the last sentence of the first reading: “Let him who is wise understand these things; let him who is prudent know them. Straight are the paths of the LORD, in them the just walk, but sinners stumble in them.” This leads us straight into the Gospel. What is the path of the lord that one needs to walk to be wise and to be blessed.

Gospel.

When a scribe asked Jesus, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus replies that :

The first is this:  Hear, O Israel!  The Lord our God is Lord alone!  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength.

The second is this:  You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

The Path of the Lord is to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. It’s total commitment. Even, we do not usually like superficial and inconsistent love, so does God. and love of ourselves and others is inseparable from the first commandment. The order in which Jesus mentions is important because we usually care for me, my family and  then relationship with God if at all time is left.

 

This season of lent invites us today to have total commitment to God’s love.

Total reliance on God's providence.

Let us value which is more important in our lives today.

 

“Your heart must be wholly devoted to the LORD, our God, observing his statutes and keeping his commandments, as on this day.” (1 kings 8:61)

Thursday of the Third Week of Lent

Jeremiah 7:23-28

Luke 11:14-23

 

Choose today- The Kingdom of God or The Kingdom of Satan

 

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, Jesus had performed many healings and several exorcisms. There are several instances that Jesus freed those troubled and oppressed souls. In today’s Gospel instance people who witnessed however attributed it to the power  of satan not to the power of the Holy Spirit.

 

The Accusation: Some people, especially the leaders who were always against him, reacted negatively and accused him of resorting to Satan’s power to cast out evil spirits; they claimed that He gains His power and authority from Satan; that He is associated with Belzaboul,satan. They tried to defame him and slander him. They attributed it to Satan rather than the power of God.

The Anwer: Jesus makes two interesting arguments.

1.      According to today's reading, we get a glimpse that there are among their own who cast out demons which are attributed to God. Jesus makes a counter argument that  by associating his exorcism to the power of satan, they naturally attribute their own to Satan. If they are accusing Jesus they are accusing and  denouncing their own people. There is a hypocrisy and double standard here.

2.      In his second argument, Jesus says that"Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.” If the household, society, nation, the kingdom or satan turn against their own people, land, or the force, it is finished. It results in destruction and annihilation of its own existence. This can not be so. This would never happen.

 

Jesus made it clear that it is through the power and authority of God that He casts out evil spirits; and brings healing and freedom from sin and satan. The presence of power and authority of God is clearly present in all the healings and exorcisms which point towards the kingdom of God.

At the end of the Gospel, jesus makes a pressing statement that “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.'' It is either we belong to Jesus or against him; either we belong to God’ kingdom or to the kingdom of satan; either to the light or to the darkness.

This is what the first reading of the day reminds us, Prophet Jeremiah reminds the people to Listen to God and obey that they may prosper and be children of God. with God there is life and prosperity; healing and liberation; peace and security.

But the people turned against God and refused to follow and be faithful to his commandments, thus they were scattered. They are in need of liberation.

 

Dear Brothers and Sisters, therefore the readings invite us to question where do we stand? Do I stand with Jesus or with evil spirits/Satan?

Do I believe Jesus or refuse to ignore?

Let us reflect and answer ourselves.  

 

I am the LORD, the God of all the living! Is anything too difficult for me? (Jeremiah 32:27)

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (Matthew 28:18)

The Lord, The Law and The Life

Dear brothers and sisters in christ jesus, the readings of the day focus on the “Law”.

In the first reading:

The people of Israel were on the verge of entering into the Promised Land. so moses as a final act of reminding the message of God, he brings to their attention to the Lord, the Law and the Life. there is no greater God than Him, for He created them, liberated and accompanied throughout their desert journey always protecting through his presence. God was always with them, through the Ark, through tabernacle, through the pillar of Cloud and Fire and also through Moses.

Generally speaking, if a society is to be considered to be great and best is usually measured by their Laws, administration and observance of those Laws. The Laws God commanded to Israel are a way of life, which enables them to be closer to God as well as enriches their life.

Two objectives of the Laws.

1. Therefore he strongly instructs them to be a living witness to the way of life inscribed by the laws, that is to heed to them and apply to their lives then only it will be recognised law is fulfilled.
2. And they ought to pass onto the next generation, instil the way of life to their children that they have fostered through the laws. The reason being, people usually are surrounded by many different people and laws and customs. Therefore if they do not keep up nor transmit to the next generation there is a danger of forgetting the beauty of their way of life, eventually it may perish.

Gospel

Jesus Christ was the best expression of the Law, the closeness and the blessing of God. During Jesus' time, the law was seen only as an external observance and Pharisees and scribes were deemed as best exemplary in this regard. The original intention envisioned by God in regard to the Laws was in some way distorted over the years. Therefore Jesus makes it his mission to point out the obvious and steer them back to the original intention.

Everyone thought looking at how Jesus acts towards the laws, has come to abolish the law. However he makes it perfectly clear that He has not come to abolish, abrogate but to complete it, bring forth the deeper meaning assigned to the laws.

Laws include a deep sense of Love, Justice, compassion and unity. It must transcend mere external show to involve the heart and mind. Thus the purpose of the Law is to Live, let live and grow. In other words, it is the love of God and love of neighbours. The Laws of God embody moral, religious and civil force for a better way of life and identity.

Observe them carefully, for this is your wisdom and discernment in the sight of the peoples, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “This great nation is truly a wise and discerning people.” (Deuteronomy 4:6)

then the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. (Romans 7:12)

Tuesday of the Third Week of Lent

Forgiveness leads to Freedom

Dear brothers and sisters in christ jesus, the readings of the day focus on Prayer for Protection and Forgiveness.

1st reading:

The Context : Nebuchadenezzar, the king of Babylon, sets up a huge statue (Probably His or His Gods) in the centre of Babylon and orders everyone to bow down and worship and whosoever refuses to heed the command are punishable by death and will be thrown into the high voltage furnace blazing high.

But the Hebrews officials, especially  Shadrach, Meshach and Azariah refused to bow down and worship, then they were summoned before the king to give their account. The king was enraged with anger and ordered  them to be thrown into the furnace. Here in this context Azariah makes a wonderful prayer for God’s Mercy and Protection.

At the moment of their agony, they were content with one thing that they have been faithful to God and His call and never turned away from Him. Azariah prayed to God praising and thanking for all the blessings. He prayed for God’s will and pleaded for forgiveness for the times they were not able to worship as they were abandoned in Babylon without any leader. He prayed to receive them with their contrite heart and humble spirit. And thus placed their situation at the feet of the Lord’s mercy and protection. 

God heard their prayers and saved them, everyone along with Nebuchadenezzar witnessed the Presence of Living God.

 

Everytime we recite Our Father, (the Lord’s Prayer) we pray for forgiveness “forgive us as we forgive those who sin against us.” it’s a courageous prayer, to be honest it’s not easy to forgive. It's a hard task indeed. Because the pain, the grief that arises from the offences,hurts and opinions of the others makes it even impossible to face.

Today in the Gospel, St. Peter asks how many times should I forgive my brother?, well he thought he was very generous with 7 times but Jesus multiplied it and places no limit to it. There is no quantity and there is no fixed quota, that we should forgive only these many times. But everytime one genuinely repents and returns, he has to accept, forgive and renew the relationship. God acts in the same way. 

An Example:

The act of forgiving: we are in controle. when we forgive we relieve another person’s debt and we are on the other hand released from the pain and can move. Therefore it’s a kind of freedom we experience at the moment.

The act of asking for forgiveness: we are at the mercy of Giver.

In the parable when the servant appears to be sincere and pleads for mercy and time,  the king was so generous that he forgave the total debt. He was freed.  But the same servant could not forgive his fellow servant who vowed only a little amount compared to him. Instead he seized, choked and demanded to be paid immediately. Unfortunately he was not sincere in his repentance, thus he lost the mercy of the King too. here:

The king represents God, He has forgiven completely and in return we are encouraged to forgive others. There is no “ifs and Buts” and there is no limit to forgiving. But if we try to hold it ourselves there is a risk of losing God’s mercy in our lives.

★      Forgiveness leads to freedom

★      Forgiveness renews relationships

★      Forgiveness consists of a “Give and Take” system.

★      Forgiveness is not turning blind eye to the wrong but restoring the broken one.

★      Forgiveness is to form an alliance with God

“with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received” (Daniel 3:39)

“forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12)

Monday of the Third Week of Lent

2 Kings 5:1-15

Luke 4:24-30

Small yet Significant

(Pride & Prejudices to Submission)

 

Dear Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, at the preaching of Jesus in Synagogue many people were amazed at his teaching with authority but were not moved to faith. Looking at their impassive response Jesus says “No prophet is ever accepted in his own country”. He then goes on to give examples of two famous prophets, Elijah and Elisha. When the people disobeyed their message and later when there was a difficult situation in the nation the prophets were sent to bless non believers rather than Isralites. By this example Jesus added fuel to the fire, they were already angry and by this they felt insulted. So they wanted to kill him, throw him out of their town.

The people of Nazareth thought they knew everything, they were not ready to accept the Truth. They thought of Jesus as just Carpenter’s Son, so they could not conceive the words of Jesus for in their sight Jesus was an insignificant person (but not in reality). God speaks in various ways through various people, and can lead sometimes even through insignificant  people.

In the first reading, We have the two best examples of such people, small in their status but significant in character.

The context was Naman, valiant and victorious, the army commander from the king of Syria was a leper or suffering from some kind of skin disease. There are two characters who would play an important role in his healing.

1.    The Young Israelite girl: she was taken as captive when they invaded Israel and she became a maid to Naman’s wife. Though she was among strangers she did not leave her faith and always remembered that her God is faithful. Having learned of her master’s sickness she cared for him and  was compassionate. She was also a trusted servant.

She had faith in God, in the prophet of God, and in his ability to cure the ailment. This gave a new hope to Naaman and thus decided to go to Elisha with the permission of the King.

The Prophet Elisha : 

Naaman came to the prophet with a lot of wealth and gifts, thinking that he could buy good health with wealth. But not possible

When the prophet told him to wash seven times in River Jordan, he felt insulted and full of anger. He thought the prophet would magically wave his hand and cure him. Not the way he expected. His pride and prejudice concealed his reasoning and thus decided in haste to return home.

This is where the second character comes in to lead to healing.

2.    The Soldiers / Servants of Namaan: the solderies/ Servant reason with their Master, Naaman. They pleaded with him to listen to the prophet, it was a simple act of washing seven times. They were caring for their Master and trusting in the Prophet, so they made him rethink his decision. Thus when he buries his pride and does what he is told, he comes out healed physically and spiritually. Thus when he submits to the word he is healed.

 

 

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, there are times we miss the voice  and guidance of God through our pride and prejudices.

We can not buy health with wealth but only through submission to God’s word

People of Nazareth lacked the attitude of submitting and considering everyone is important thus missed out the blessings. Naaman was also in a similar situation but through servant girl and servants, though small, insignificant as per status but were significant for healing and blessing.

Let us during this lent, remove the obstacle of pride and prejudice and respect all. God speaks and works in various ways, small yet significant.

 

“Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant.” (2 Kings 5:15)

God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God. (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)
