"యేసు ఆ పానీయం అందుకొని "సమాప్తమైనది" అని తలవంచి, ప్రాణము విడిచెను. (యోహాను19:30)

సిలువలో క్రీస్తు పొందుతున్న వేదన, బాధ ఘోరాతి ఘోరంగా ఉంది. క్రీస్తు కొరడాలతో కొట్టబడి, సిలువయిపై వ్రేలాడదీయబడి, బల్లెముతో పొడవబడి, ముళ్ళకీరిటంతో గుచ్చబడి, పాపపు భారమును మోస్తూ రక్తము ధారలై కారుతూ ఉహించారని కష్టాలను అనుభవించారు. ఇంకా ఎక్కడో కొంచెం ఉన్న శక్తితో  మృత్యువుతో పోరాడుతూ, "సమాప్తమైనది", అని పలికెను.  ఒక సాధారణ పశువుల పాకలో ప్రారంభమైన ఈ  ప్రయాణం ఈ సిలువ యాగంతో ముగుస్తుంది. ఈ మాటల్లో ప్రగాఢమైన ప్రాముఖ్యత ఉంది.

సాధారణ అర్థం:

●      కొన్నిసార్లు మనం అప్పగించిన పనిని పూర్తి చేసినప్పుడు లేదా ఏదైనా మార్గంలో ఉన్న ఒడిదుడుకుల నుండి బయటపడినప్పుడు (విద్యార్థులు మరియు ఉద్యోగుల విషయంలో చాలా నిజం) నిట్టూర్పుగా, హమ్మయ్య  " పూర్తయింది" అని చెబుతాము.

●      మనల్ని వెంటాడుతున్న ఏదైనా చెడునకు  ముగింపుకు వచ్చినప్పుడు, “ముగిసింది లేదా సమాప్తమైనది” అని కూడా చెబుతాము, ఉదాహరణకు కోవిడ్ అంతమైనప్పుడు మనము సంతోషంగా హమ్మయ్య అని ఊపిరి పీల్చుకొని అంత అయిపొయింది అనుకున్నాము.

"సమాప్తమైనది" అని యేసు చెప్పాడు - సాఫల్యం యొక్క నిట్టూర్పు

అన్నింటిలో మొదటిది, యేసు పని చేస్తున్నాడని, పరిశుద్ధ కార్యమును నెరవేరుస్తున్నాడని  ఇది సూచిస్తుంది. అసలు, “సమాప్తమైనది” అని ప్రకటించడానికి యేసు సరిగ్గా ఏమి చేస్తున్నాడు. “నీవు  నాకు అప్పగించిన పనిని పూర్తిచేసి, నిన్ను ఈ లోకమున మహిమపరిచితిని. ఓ  తండ్రీ, లోక ఆరంభమునకు పూర్వము  నీయొద్ద నాకు ఏ మహిమ ఉండెనో    ఆ మహిమతో నీ సమక్షమున  మహిమపరచుము (యోహాను 17:4-5). కాబట్టి, తండ్రియైన దేవుడు తనకు అప్పగించిన వాటన్నిటినీ యేసు నెరవేర్చాడని స్పష్టమవుతుంది.

అప్పగించబడిన ఆ పవిత్ర కార్యము  ఏమిటి?

కాబట్టి ఇక్కడ ఆ పవిత్ర కార్యము  ఏమిటి మరియు యేసు ఎందుకు వచ్చారు మరియు ఏమి  పూర్తి చేసారు? ఈ పదాల అర్థాన్ని బాగా అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి యేసు చెప్పిన మాటలను పరిగణనలోకి తీసుకోవడం మంచిది. యేసు తన పని గురించి స్పష్టమైన అవగాహన కలిగి ఉన్నాడు, అందువలన అతను ఇలా చెప్పాడు:

●      "మనుష్యకుమారుడు తప్పిపోయిన దానిని వెదకి రక్షించుటకు వచ్చియున్నాడు." (లూకా 19:10)

●      "ఇదిగో! లోకపాములను పరిహరించు దేవుని గొఱ్ఱెపిల్ల" (యోహాను 1:29)

●      "పాపులను రక్షించడానికి క్రీస్తు యేసు ఇహలోకమునకు తరలి వచ్చెను." (1 తిమోతి 1:15)

యేసు తన ముందున్న లక్ష్యాన్ని చెప్పడానికి రెండు మాటలలో  ఉపయోగిస్తాడు: పాత్ర & జ్ఞానస్నానము

●      "తండ్రీ, నీ చిత్తమైతే ఈ పాత్రను న నుండి తొలగింపుము. కానీ న ఇష్టము కాదు. నీచిత్తమే నెరవేరును గాక!అని ప్రార్ధించెను." (లూకా 22:42)

●      "నేను శ్రమలతో కూడిన జ్ఞానస్నానము పొందవలెను. అది నెరవేరు వరకు న మనస్సుకు శాంతి లేదు." (లూకా 12:50)

సమాప్తమైనది - విజయపు కేకలు

మన చరిత్రను చుసిన లేదా మన స్వంత అనుభవాల నుండి (క్రీడలు, విద్యావేత్తలు లేదా యుద్ధం) మనందరికీ తెలిసినట్లుగా, విజేత ఉత్సాహపూరితమైన స్వరంతో గట్టిగా మరియు విస్తృతంగా ప్రకటిస్తాడు: సంపాతమైనది,  సాధించబడింది అని. అలాగే యేసు అరుపు కూడా "యేసు మరల బిగ్గరగా కేక వేసి ప్రాణము విడిచెను" (మత్తయి 27:50). యోహాను ఈ బిగ్గరగా కేకలు వేయడం యొక్క మాటను మనకు అందించాడు: "సమాప్తమైంది!" నిజానికి ఇది విజయ కేక. ప్రపంచం నలుమూలల ప్రతిధ్వనించే విజయం. తండ్రి చిత్తం పూర్తి చేయడంలో విజయగర్వం, విధేయత, వినయం మరియు బాధలతో కూడిన జీవితం ఇప్పుడు కొత్త శకానికి నాంది పలికింది. విముక్తి ఇప్పుడు పూర్తయింది. క్రీస్తు తండ్రి తనకు అప్పగించిన పని నెరవేర్చారు.

మన జీవితాలకు ఒక సందేశం

లక్ష్యంతో కూడిన జీవితం: యేసు తనకు అప్పగించబడిన పనిని నెరవేర్చడానికి, ఒక గొప్ప ఉద్దేశ్యంతో నడిచాడు. ఆ ఉద్దేశమే లేకపోతే యేసు మానవ రూపాన్ని తీసుకోవడంలో ప్రయోజనం లేదు, ఆ పదానికి ఏమీ అర్థం కాదు. కాబట్టి, మన జీవితాలు కూడా ఉన్నతమైన లక్ష్యంతో నడపబడాలి, అప్పుడు మాత్రమే మనం మన శక్తి సామర్థ్యాలు మరియు ప్రతిభను  ఆ లక్ష్యాన్ని సాధించడానికి పెట్టుబడి పెట్టగలము. ప్రతి రోజు మనం క్రీస్తుతో ప్రార్థించాలి: "నా ఇష్టం కాదు, నీచిత్తమే నెరవేరాలి." (లూకా 22:42). దేవుని చిత్తం చేయడానికి మనం ఇక్కడ ఉన్నామని మనం నమ్మాలి. లేకుంటే అస్తవ్యస్తమైన జీవితం అవుతుంది మనది.

 

శ్రద్ధతో కూడిన జీవితం : కోరుకున్న లక్ష్యాన్ని సాధించడానికి, లక్ష్యాన్ని చేరుకోవడానికి సహాయపడే అవకాశాలకు ప్రాధాన్యత ఇస్తూ వాటిపై కేంద్రీకరిస్తూ దృష్టి మరియు క్రమశిక్షణ అలవర్చుకోవాలి, అనవసరమైన వాటికీ వద్దు అని కూడా చెప్పగలగాలి. 

 

విధేయతతో కూడిన జీవితం: పౌలు చెప్పినట్లు యేసు "తనను తాను తగ్గించుకొని మరణము వరకు విధేయుడైనాడు" (ఫిలిప్పీయులకు 2:8). ఇది ముఖ్యమైనది ఎందుకంటే ఇది స్వతంత్ర జీవనం మరియు చర్యకు వ్యతిరేకం ఇటువంటి స్వతంత్ర జీవన విధానం ఉద్దేశాన్ని నెరవేర్చుటలో అడ్డంకిగా ఉంటుంది. కాబట్టి దేవునికి విధేయత తప్పనిసరి

 

త్యాగం మరియు బాధలతో కూడిన జీవితం: "సమాప్తమైనది" అని చెప్పగలగడం సులభమైన మార్గం కాదు. యేసు అన్నింటినీ సహించాడు, అతను కష్టపడ్డాడు, త్యాగం చేసాడు, ఘోరంగా బాధపడ్డాడు, ఎగతాళి చేయబడ్డాడు, తిరస్కరించబడ్డాడు, ద్రోహం చేయబడ్డారు, కానీ అతను తండ్రి పనిని పూర్తి చేయడానికి ముందుకు సాగాడు, చివరకు "సమాప్తమైనది" అని చెప్పారు.

 

సమాప్తమైనది అని చెప్పే మార్గం  పూర్తిగా గులాబీల పులపాన్పు కాదు లేదా పూర్తిగా ముళ్ళతో నిండి ఉన్నది కాదు. మంచి మరియు చెడు రోజులు రెండూ ఉంటాయి, వేసవి రోజులు అలాగే శీతాకాలపు రోజులు కూడా ఉంటాయి. సమాప్తమైనది అంటే దానంతట అదే కాదు,  మనం పోరాడాలి. మనం త్యాగం చేయడానికి మరియు బాధలకు సిద్ధంగా ఉండాలి ఎందుకంటే పని చేయకుండా  ఉండటం విజయానికి దారితీయదు కానీ మన ప్రయత్నాలను వదులుకోకూడదు . సిలువపై క్రీస్తు లాగా మనం ఇలా చెప్పగలుగుతాము: "సమాప్తమైనది", మీరు నాకు అప్పగించిన పనిని నేను పూర్తి చేశాను.

పునీత పౌల్ గారు ఈ విధంగా అంటారు, "నేను బలిగా అర్పించబడవలసిన కాలము ఆసన్నమైనది. నేను వెడలిపోవు సమయము వచ్చినది. నేను మంచి పోరాటం పోరాడితిని. న పరుగు పందెమును ముగించితిని. విశ్వాసమును నిలుపుకొంటిని.” (2 తిమోతి 4:6-8)

 

 

 

The Sixth Word

"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head, he handed over his spirit." (John 19:30)  

The pain on the cross was so horrible, he was beaten and whipped, nailed and pierced, crowned with thorns, bleeding profusely and bore the weight of sin and experienced being forsaken by God, suffering in unimaginable ways possible. And fighting with death with the power little left in his body said, “IT IS FINISHED”, the journey which had a simple stable beginning comes to end, however there is more to it. There is profound significance in these words.

 

General meaning:

●     Sometimes we say “It is finished” as a sigh of relief when we have completed certain work or gotten something out of the way (very much true of students and employees)

●     We might also say, “It is finished,” when something bad haunting us comes to an end, for example we were happy when Covid was ended.

Jesus says “It is Finished” - A sigh of accomplishment

First of all, It signifies that Jesus is at work. So what exactly Jesus was working on to declare, “It is Finished”.  “I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made (John 17:4-5). Hence, it is clear that Jesus has fulfilled and accomplished everything that God the Father entrusted him.  Something has ended, but something has also begun!

What was the entrusted Work, the “IT”

So the obvious questions here are what is “IT” and why did Jesus come and what was finished? It is better to consider the words of Jesus itself to better understand the meaning of these words.  Jesus has clear understanding of his work, thus he states:

●     "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45)

●     "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." (Luke 19:10)

●     "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)

●     "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." (1 Timothy 1:15)

Jesus also uses two metaphors to state his mission ahead of him:

●     "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42)

●     "But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! (Luke 12:50)

 

 

Jesus also performed many miraculous work, preached enlightening message, healed and showed the compassionate heart but all struggle he underwent, the suffering he endured, the hostility he faced and the rejection and the betrayal he experienced  and the climax horror on the cross culminates into one ultimate purpose, to save us from our sins. He paid ransom and gifted us with freedom and grace fulfilling the grand plan of God the Father. “IT” is the atoning Sacrifice of the Son of God for the salvation of the world. Now IT is finished. (Hebrews 10:11-14)

It Is Finished - A Cry of Victory

As we all know from our readings of history or in our own experiences (sports, academics or  war) the winner emphatically with an excited voice announces loudly and broadly: It is finished, It is achieved. So also the shout of Jesus  "cried out again in a loud voice" (Matthew 27:50). John gives us the content of this loud cry: "It is finished!" This is in fact a cry of victory. A victory which echoes to all corners of the world. A shout of victory of finishing the mission, a life of obedience, humility, and suffering that now ushers in a new era. The Redemption was now completed. The work which His Father had given Him to do was accomplished.

★    a cry of accomplishment of all the promises and prophecies of the Scriptures

★    A cry of victory over the powers of Sin, Satan and Death. Jesus totally destroyed them.  

A Message for our Lives

1.    A Life of purpose : Jesus was driven by a great purpose, which was entrusted to him to fulfil. If there was no purpose to Jesus taking human form, the word would mean nothing. Therefore, our lives too must be driven by a higher purpose, then only we can discern and invest our gifts and abilities and talents into achieving that purpose. Each day we ought to pray with Christ: "Not my will, but thine be done." (Luke 22:42). We must be convinced that we are here to do God's Will.  Otherwise it’s a disordered life.

2.    A Life of Focus :  in order to achieve the desired purpose, there should be focus and discipline which sets the priorities straight, saying No to unnecessary to Yes to opportunities that render helpful to reach the target.

3.    A Life of obedience: Jesus was As Paul would say "He humbled himself and became obedient to death" (Philippians 2:8). It is important because it is opposite to independent living and action which would be an obstacle in realising the purpose. Therefore obedience to God is a must.

4.    A Life of sacrifice and suffering: to be able to utter, “ It is finished” is not an easy path. Jesus had endured everything to the end, he struggled, sacrificed, suffered horribly , was ridiculed, was rejected, was betrayed but he kept going forward to finishing the work of the Father, finally saying “It is finished”.

The path to saying it is finished is not a bed of roses nor is it full of thorns. There will be both good and bad days, there will be summer days as well as winter days. Finishing does not come on its own, we have to fight our way through it. We have to be willing to sacrifice and suffer because staying idle can not lead to success but not giving up on our efforts. Like Christ on the Cross we will be able to say:  “ it is finished”, I have done the work You gave to me.

St. Paul says,   "The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearance." (2 Timothy 4:6-8)

ప్రియమైన మిత్రులారా, సాధారణంగా మనం క్రీస్తు గురించి ఆలోచించినప్పుడు, మనం ప్రశాంతమైన మరియు నిర్మలమైన చిత్రాన్ని మదిలో తలచుకుంటాము, కానీ సిలువపై రక్తసిక్తమైన మరియు బాధతో ఉన్న రూపాన్ని తలచుకోము.

సందర్భము మరియు పరిస్థితి: క్రీస్తు ప్రభువు శిలువేయబడి చాల సేపు అవుతుంది, ఊపిరి పీల్చుకోవడం కూడా కష్టంగా మారింది, వేలాడతీయబడిన చేతులు, భారంతో ఉన్న భుజాలు, పొరబడిన నాలుక(నోరు), సూర్యుని వేడికి అలసి సొమ్మసిల్లి పోతున్న దేహము, ఒక తీవ్ర విషాద కరమైన సమయము, యేసుక్రీస్తు మానవ జీవిత ముగింపు సమయము బాదమయము.

ఈ ఐదవ పదంలో రెండు ముఖ్యమైన అంశాలు మరియు సందేశము దాగిఉంది.

యేసు క్రీస్తు ప్రభుని దైవ స్వభావము - ఆధ్యాత్మిక దాహము.

అన్నిటికంటే మొదటిది, చాలా ముఖ్యమైనది ఏమిటంటే ఈ పవిత్ర పదం క్రీస్తు యొక్క భౌతిక స్వభావాన్ని మరియు అతని మానవత్వాన్ని స్పష్టంగా గుర్తు చేస్తుంది.

మన జీవితంలో కూడా శారీరకంగ పని చేసిన తర్వాత లేదా ఎండలో ప్రయాణించినట్లైతే మనకు కూడా దాహమేస్తుంది, సొమ్మసిల్లిపోతాము. మనందరమూ అనుభవించినవాళ్ళమే. అందుకే దాహం తీర్చుకోవడం ఎంత ముఖ్యమో మనకు తెలుసు.

నాకు దాహమేస్తుంది అని యేసు చెప్పినప్పుడు, ప్రభువు కూడా అదే అనుభవించారు. యోహాను సువార్త 4 అధ్యాయం :5- 7 వచనాలలో చూసినట్లయితే, యేసు సుదూర ప్రయాణం చేసి అలసిపోయి, ఒక బావి వద్ద కూర్చొని, ఒక సమరయ స్త్రీని త్రాగడానికి నీళ్ళు అడిగారు. ఇక్కడ కూడా బాధతో మరియు మండుటెండలో శిలువను మోసిన తర్వాత, ప్రభువు అలసిపోయి, సొలసిపోయి తీవ్ర దాహ వేదనకు గురయ్యారు. అంటే, దీనిని బట్టి మనకు తెలిసేదేమిటంటే దైవ కుమారుడైన తన దైవత్వము రూపంలో దాక్కోలేదు, బాధలు అనుభవిస్తున్నట్లు నటించలేదు, ఎలాంటి నటన, నాటకాలు లేవు.

నిజముగా, వాస్తవికంగా శరీర రూపధారిగా బాధలను అనుభవిస్తున్నారు, నడవలేక పడిపోతున్నారు, రక్తము ధారలుగా కారుతుంది, ఇంతటి వేదనల వలన నిజముగా దాహము వేస్తుంది. త్రాగడానికి కొంచెం నీరు అడుగుతున్నారు.

క్రీస్తు నిజంగా బాధపడ్డారు మరియు తన మానవ రూపంలో మన పాపాల శిక్షను భరించాడు. అతను మన కోసం మరియు మన పాపాల కోసం శరీర దాహంతో మరణించాడని ఇది మనకు గుర్తుచేస్తుంది, దీనిని తిరస్కరించే ప్రసక్తే లేదు.

యేసు క్రీస్తు ప్రభుని దైవ స్వభావము - ఆధ్యాత్మిక దాహము.

ఈ దాహము ఆధ్యాత్మిక ప్రాముఖ్యతను కూడా కలిగి ఉంది. ఈ దాహము మనందరి కోసం, మన ఆత్మల కోసం ఉన్న దాహాన్ని వ్యక్తపరుస్తుంది. సిలువపై ఉన్నక్రీస్తు మానవాళి అంతా తనను తెలుసుకోవాలని మరియు ప్రేమించాలనే దాహమును తెలియపరుస్తుంది. పునీత అగస్టీన్ గారు చెప్పినట్లుగా మనమందరం దాహంతో ఉన్నాము, "మనం దేవుని కోసం దాహం తో ఉండాలని ముందుగా దేవుడే మనకోసం దాహంతో ఉన్నారు." (సత్యోపదేశ సంక్షేమము, 2560). ఆధ్యాత్మిక కోణంలో ధ్యానించి నట్లైతే క్రీస్తు దాహము దేనికి సూచిస్తుందంటే:

యేసు నీటి కోసం దాహంతో ఉన్నప్పటికీ, మన మోక్షం కోసం, దేవునితో సంబంధం కోసం ఎక్కువ దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

యేసుకు మన పరిస్థితి తెలుసు, కాబట్టి మన విశ్వాస ప్రకటన కోసం మరింత దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

మన జీవితం యొక్క మార్పు కోసం దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

మన ఆత్మల సంరక్షణ కోసం దాహంతో ఉన్నారు..

మనలను సరైన దారిలో నడవాలనే దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

మనకు జీవజలాన్ని బహుమతిగా అందించాలని దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

మన శారీరక తృప్తి నుండి ఆధ్యాత్మికంగా ఎదగాలనే దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

మనలను క్షమించాలని దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

మనలను తన సువార్తికులుగా (ఆయన సందేశాన్ని పంచుకునేవారు) చేయడానికి ఆయన దాహంతో ఉన్నారు.

నిజానికి మన హృదయాలలో కూడా ఒక ఆధ్యాత్మిక దాహం ఉంది, జీవిత అర్థం మరియు నిజమైన ప్రేమ కోసం దాహంతో ఉన్నాము, యేసు ఒక సమారియా స్త్రీకి వాగ్దానం చేసిన జీవజలాన్ని వాగ్దానము వలె మన దాహాన్ని తీర్చగల ఏకైక వ్యక్తి యేసు.

"ఎవడైనా దప్పిక కొన్నచో నా దగ్గరకు వచ్చి దప్పిక తీర్చుకొనును గాక." యోహాను 7:37

లేఖనాలను నెరవేర్చడానికి మరియు అతని తండ్రి చిత్తాన్ని పూర్తి చేయడానికి.

ఈ మాట ద్వారా లేఖనాల మరియు ప్రవక్తల ప్రవచనాలు నెరవేరాయి. ప్రభువుకు లేఖనాలు తెలుసునని ఈ పదం ద్వారర నెరవేర్చి మనలను వాక్యము ద్వారా ఒకటి చేస్తున్నారు. నెరవేరిన కొన్ని వచనాలు:

"నా శక్తి పెంకు వలె ఎండిపోయినది. నా నాలుక అంగిటికి అంటుకొనుచున్నది. నేను చచ్చి దుమ్ములో పడిఉండినట్లు చేసితివి." (కీర్తన 22:15)

"అరచి అరచి నేను అలసిపోతిని. నా గొంతు బొంగురు పోయినది... వారు నాకు భోజనము మారుగా విషమును ఒసగిరి. నేను దప్పిక గొనిఉన్నపుడు ద్రాక్షాసవం ఇచ్చిరి". (కీర్తన 69:3, 21)

క్రీస్తు తనను తాను బలపరచుకోవాలని, తండ్రి అప్పగించిన చిత్తాన్ని పూర్తి చేయడానికి దాహంతో ఉన్నారు. క్రీస్తు భయంకరమైన నొప్పి, శారీరక అలసటతో బాధపడుతున్నప్పటికీ, మన కోసం, దేవునితో మనకు సంబంధం ఏర్పాటు చేయడం కోసం తనకు ఉన్న శక్తినంతా చేర్చి పలికారు.

ఆయన ఆధ్యాత్మికంగా మన కోసం దప్పిక గొన్నట్లే మనం దేవుని కోసం దప్పికతో ఉంటున్నామా ? ముఖ్యంగా కీర్తన 42: 2 వాక్యంతో ధ్యానించుదాం. " సజీవ దేవుడైన నీ కొరకు నా ఆత్మ ఆరాట పడుచున్నది. నీ దివ్యముఖమును నేనెపుడు దర్శింతునా అని తపించుచున్నది."

The Fifth Word

“I thirst.” John 19:28

Dear friends, usually when we think of Christ image, we picture a calm and serene picture, but we do not reflect on bloodied and cringing in pain and suffering on the Cross. But here in this situation Jesus utters his gift word, “ I THIRST”.

Situation: he is there on the cross for almost six hours now. It has become hard for him even to breathe, he must pull himself up as he is hung on the arms, the shoulder aches, his mouth parched and is clearly exhausted as the sun directly hits his head and body. The end of Jesus' human life.

It has two different levels to reflect on:

Physical nature (Jesus’ humanity)

First of all, it is very significant, because this word clearly reminds us of His physical nature and his humanity. We all can relate to being thirsty. After continuous work,we feel tired bodily and if we are under the sun for a long time, we feel dehydrated. We know how important it is to quench our thirst.

When Jesus said I Thirst, he too experienced the same. In John Chapter 4:5-7, we see Jesus tired from a long journey, sitting at a well, asking a Samaritan woman for water to drink. Here on the after carrying the cross in pain and under the sun, he is tired and wearied, dehydrated. That means, Jesus the Son of God, the God himself is not hiding under the veil of his Divinity, nor pretending to suffer. There is neither drama nor action. But in a real and tangible way in his bodily form undergoing the suffering, he is falling, bleeding and now thirsting for something to drink.

He truly suffered and bore the penalty of our sins in his humanity. This reminds us that He thirsted and died in the flesh for us and for our sins, there is no denying of this.

Spiritual Nature (Divinity)

The Thirst is also a spiritual reality, containing spiritual significance. It expresses his thirst for us all, for our souls. He thirsts on the cross for all mankind to know and love him. We all thirst for, as St. Augustine tells, “God thirsts that we may thirst for him” (Catechism, 2560). His thirst in spiritual sense: Although Jesus is thirsty for water, He is more thirsty for salvation, for a relationship with him.

Jesus knows her situation, so he was more thirsty for expression of faith

He was thirsty for conversion of life

He was thirsty for Soul.

He was thirsty to keep on right path

He was thirsty to offer gift of Living Water

He was thirsty to raise from physical satisfaction to spiritual nourishment

He was thirsty for to acknowledge her mistakes

He was thirsty to make us His evangelisers (sharers of His message)

Deep down even in our hearts, we have a spiritual thirst to be satisfied, we thirst for meaning in life and for true love, Jesus is the only one who can quench our thirst by giving the Living Water which he promised to a Samaritan woman at the well.

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink.” John 7:37

2. To fulfil the Scriptures and complete His Mission.

There is also fulfilment of the Scriptures, and the prophecies which remind us that he knows the scriptures and is determined to fulfil that he is truly the One, who comes to save us from our sins and give us salvation. The scriptures fulfilled are:

My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. (Psalm 22:15)

I am weary with my crying out; My throat is parched, They gave me poison for food,

And for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. (Psalm 69:3, 21)

He thirsted to strengthen himself, to bring to completion the mission entrusted to Him by Father. He is both undergoing terrible pain, physical exhaustion but summoned all his strength to remind us that he Thirst for us, for our relationship with God.

Let us reflect

How much excruciating pain and suffering did Jesus undergo physically for our sins?

Why is it so important to reflect on Jesus' humanity?

What is the importance of Scriptures in life?

Do we thirst for God, as he thirst for us spiritually? Let us reflect with Psalm 42:2

The only way we satisfy our thirst is with the Living Water, the word made flesh, the Holy Spirit poured into our heart.

whoever drinks the water I shall never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)
